Over the last few weeks, the CDC quietly changed their official “Autism and Vaccines” webpage. The page now claims that the statement “vaccines do not cause autism” is not evidence based. This is a massive shift from their previous stance and has caused an uproar in the medical and scientific communities.
They are putting out information that contradicts decades of established research. And they know exactly what they are doing.
Why This Matters in the Age of AI Search
As someone with over ten years of experience in marketing, with the majority of that spent in Google search optimization, I need to explain how this new AI generated search landscape is allowing the CDC to push this narrative so effectively.
You can look at peer reviewed scientific and medical studies from institutions like Johns Hopkins and the Mayo Clinic and see that the myth linking vaccines to autism has been debunked ten times over throughout the years. However, you will likely never see those studies when you search normally, because of how Google and the CDC operate.
Starting in 2024, we saw a major shift in Google search results focusing on AI generation. And from March through June of 2026, AI generated search, or GEO (Generative Engine Optimization), became the new staple of organic research.
You have to understand that GEO does not show results based on actual scientific or medical credibility. The ranking system focuses on how many links point to a site, how many articles they have, and how long the site has been active to establish trust.
This is especially dangerous in this new generative AI landscape. The CDC can put all of their information on their site in the exact right format for generative SEO, and they will beat out smaller medical schools and independent publications every time. The CDC is the largest medical website aside from the Mayo Clinic. So whatever they say, especially when they format it to adhere to AI best practices, their information will be seen over actual peer reviewed scientific studies.
How to Protect Your Family’s Research
The CDC has the power to do this with any research. They are feeding AI bots the incorrect information to show, and Google will display it because of how their crawls work.
Whenever you are researching anything online, whether it is autism, dementia, cancer, or anything else, please be sure to include the words “peer reviewed studies” in your search. That is the only way you will get actual credited information from scientific journals rather than AI generated summaries based on website authority.
